Vanguard is a name shared by a fictional mutant character as well as a fictional team of characters in the Marvel Comics Universe.
Vanguard (Nikolai Krylenko) is a fictional mutant character in the Marvel Comics Universe. His first appearance was in Iron Man vol. 1 #109.
Born in Minsk, the son of Russian nuclear physicist Sergei Krylov (later, the Presence), Nikolai Krylenko and his twin sister Laynia Petrovna (Darkstar) were taken at birth by the then-Soviet government to be trained as soldiers after their mutant natures manifested. The two were the rare exception to the then-government policy of killing mutant babies. They were trained to be soldiers in the Soviet army, and then special operatives of the Soviet government. Joining the KGB-sponsored Soviet Super-Soldiers, Vanguard and the team came into conflict with Iron Man and Jack of Hearts on the moon, although Vanguard then aided Iron Man, Jack of Hearts, and the other Soviet Super-Soldiers in battling the renegade Rigellians…
