Dieppe is a Canadian city in Westmorland County, New Brunswick. It is New Brunswick’s fourth-most-populous city with a history and identity that goes back to the eighteenth century. It was first incorporated as a town in 1952 and designated as a city in 2003. Its namesake comes from a commune in the Seine-Maritime department in France and was adopted to commemorate Operation Jubilee, the Dieppe Raid of 1942.
Although the City of Dieppe is officially a francophone city, both French and English services are available. Linguistically it is predominantly French-speaking (75%) mostly of Acadian French roots, though the city has an active English-speaking minority population (25%). The local accent (colloquially called “Chiac”) is unique to southeast New Brunswick. Regardless of language, however, a large majority of Dieppe’s population were in favour of the by-law regulating the use of external commercial signs in both official languages, which is a first for the province of New Brunswick….
