Beresford is a city in Lincoln and Union counties in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The population was 2,005 as of the 2010 census. The southern two-thirds is part of the Sioux City, IA–NE–SD Metropolitan Statistical Area, while the northern one-third is part of the Sioux Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Beresford Republic is the weekly newspaper.
Before the city was incorporated, the town was known as Paris, Dakota Territory. The city was renamed after Lord Charles Beresford and was formally incorporated on July 12, 1884.
Mr. John O’Rielly hauled the first load of lumber for the new Beresford Settlement from Hawarden Iowa. Mr. John O’Rielly established the O’Rielley Dray Lines. His son George D. O’Rielly would later take over the family business and start the Beresford Tea and Coffee House. George’s wife Amelia Guenzel was the first female mortician in the state of South Dakota and her father George S. Guenzel started the first Funeral Parlor and Furniture Store in the town…
