Mulgrave (2011 population: 794) is a town on the Strait of Canso in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia, Canada; immediately across from the town of Port Hawkesbury.
The town was first settled in 1800 by British Loyalists fleeing from the American Revolution and known as McNair’s Cove. The town became a part of the lumber trade with the English government. In 1818, the lumber trade ended and the fishing industry began to prosper. By 1830, it was the major source of employment for the community. Ferry services began in 1833, taking passengers to Port Hawkesbury. This service provided rail and road gateways for traffic from mainland Nova Scotia and the rest of Canada to Cape Breton and Newfoundland. The current name of Mulgrave was adopted in 1859. Steam ferries were introduced to the area in 1863, boosting the amount of traffic ferried in a day. However, in 1870, all trade agreements in the fishing industry were cancelled to protect the American fish market, and the industry collapsed. By…
